89-year-old in training to be oldest man to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats

15 August, 2017 — By Aleesha Hansel

AN 89-year-old great-grandfather is set to become the oldest person to attempt to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Norman Franklin, who has lived in Hampstead since 1953, is in training for the 874-mile journey next week alongside three sons and two daughters-in-law. The family are hoping to raise £100,000 for four charities, two of them in Camden.

Mr Franklin said: “I probably am a bit on the old side to be cycling so far, but I always like to rise to a challenge and everyone has been most encouraging.” He added: “Everyone has said that saddle sore might be the main problem on a ride this length, but I am hoping that my skin has got tougher with age.”
