Big Beethoven on a small scale with I Musicanti at Conway Hall
12 September, 2019 — By Michael White
In the days before recordings, music-lovers learned the standard repertoire in cut-down versions for four-hand piano or string quartet which they’d play at home. And while that sort of thing is no longer necessary, it can be ear-opening – as will perhaps be the case this Sunday (September 15) when Conway Hall has a concert of orchestral works by Beethoven in arrangements for a small-scale chamber group.
The group is called I Musicanti and features well-known players on the circuit like violinist Tamas Andras and cellist Richard Harwood. And you’ll hear things like Beethoven’s 1st Symphony and Violin Concerto performed by half a dozen players.
Could be interesting. And if nothing else, it saves a lot of money – on which subject, you get in free if you’re under 26!
