IT proved an action-packed weekend for junior boxers from Islington Boxing Club, who stepped between the ropes at a series of different shows to demonstrate their punching power.
Caiden Hughes, 14, got the ball rolling on Friday night when he boxed on the Fairbairn ABC Show, which was held at Dagenham Roundhouse. There was not much to separate the two boxers in a close showing at 56kg, with home boxer Hamza Sheikh just doing enough to earn a split-decision verdict.
On Saturday evening, Caiden’s identical twin brother, Kyron, who was fighting at 54kg, followed up his recent victory in the London Junior Championships by defeating Danish Club Select boxer, NF Lorenz, via a unanimous decision.
Kyron had every reason to go into the bout in confident mood after conquering the capital. He won his London title after beating Madlin Poptop, from Limehouse Boxing Academy, 4-1 in a split decision at Springwest Academy in Feltham.
On Sunday, Jacob Johnson took part in a skills bout at the Brentwood Youth ABC show against home boxer Laurence Jefferson. Competing at 73kg, the 14-year-old boxed well in only his second skills contest, gaining a welcome confidence boost following defeat in his first competitive contest a couple of weeks ago.
Meanwhile, on Monday night, William Nantu, 14, returned to winnings ways, following his defeat in the London Junior Championship semi-finals, by stopping Cricklewood ABC’s Taylor Masters on their dinner show at Clayton Crown Hotel. The referee stopped the 52kg contest in the third round.
