Expel Ken Livingstone from Labour Party, say Camden’s MPs

Jeremy Corbyn launches new investigation into former mayor's comments on Hitler

In happier times: Tulip Siddiq out campaigning with Ken Livingstone during his last mayoral campaign

CAMDEN’S Labour MPs have called for Ken Livingstone to be expelled from the party for comments the former mayor made suggesting Hitler supported Zionism.

Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq yesterday (Wednesday) wrote directly to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn questioning the sanction of a two-year suspension – one of which has already been served – after an internal disciplinary procedure.

As calls grew louder for the penalty to be expulsion, she said members had contacted her to say “they have seen this as the final straw and have terminated their membership”. Holborn and St Pancras MP Keir Starmer said Mr Livingstone should be expelled.

The comments have followed complaints from several leading members of London’s Jewish community that Labour is not tackling anti-semitism. The Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said the decision not to expel Mr Livingstone “yet again failed to show Labour was sufficiently serious about tackling the scourge of anti-semitism”.

Later yesterday, Mr Corbyn said there would be a new investigation into Mr Livingstone’s comments as he had continued making offensive remarks after the party ruling. Mr Livingstone had refused to apologise and continued to share his view that the Nazi dictator “did a deal with the Zionists”.

A group of Labour members across north London who are Jewish have come out in support of Mr Livingstone, including four members from Holborn and St Pancras and two from Hampstead and Kilburn constituencies. They said: “Starting in February last year there has been a skilfully delivered campaign to present the Left of the Labour Party as riddled with anti-semitism – a charge which we can refute based on many years of accumulated experience.”
