Family of robins make nest in bike helmet

24 May, 2017 — By Dan Carrier

WHEN nine-year-old Dora Clapham and her older brothers Chester and Wilf decided they fancied a bike ride at the weekend they were in for a surprise.

Unbeknown to them, Dora’s bike helmet, kept in a side passage to their home in Swain’s Lane, Highgate, had been turned into a des-res nest by a family of robins. The Clapham family have since quietly watched their visitors as the mother red breast feeds her brood.

Father Russ told the New Journal: “They noticed a bird’s nest in Dora’s bike helmet hanging in the side passage – she hasn’t used her bike for a while! They were even more surprised to find some baby birds in there on Sunday opening their mouths for food each time we approached. It looked like there was still one more egg to hatch. This morning mum returned – a robin – to keep her babies warm.”
