German choir to sing at Highgate Cemetery to commemorate WW1

12 July, 2018

For the 2018 WWI centenary the Deutscher Chor have been invited to Cathedrals all over Europe (Notre Dame Paris, St Paul’s Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, Coventry Cathedral, Berlin Dom, Brussels Cathedral, Ypres Menin Gate and several others) to sing concerts and services in memory of the fallen of WWI

German Radio and Television is going to cover this project and it is fully funded by three private charities in London

When the choir were planning their main concert in London, they really wanted to make a difference. They thought, what is the point of another choir singing another Requiem in yet another church to an audience that will enjoy the music. But what has that to do with WWI commemoration?

The choir wondered if it was possible to bring the audience closer to the fallen. Rather than sitting in a church, listening to music, why not bring them out to the cemeteries? Why not sing to the living and the death?

Highgate is one of the cemeteries in London with WWI war graves.
The choir are also going to sing in August next year at Ypres Menin Gate, but the main London commemoration is at Highgate Cemetery on Saturday July 21st.
