ED Miliband may have found new fans recently when he did a stint as a radio DJ – but there was no way, he told crowds at the annual York Rise Street Party, that he was going to branch out any more from politics and join in the legendary Dad’s Disco Dance Off. The MP, who lives in Dartmouth Park, was opening the annual neighbourhood get-together on Sunday when, despite the urging of neighbours, he politely declined to add his name to the entrants for the fiercely contested title of NW5’s grooviest dad – which was eventually won in great style by Andy Skipper.

Sponsored by estate agents Benham and Reeves, the day included ska band The Estimators, rock and rollers the DBs and DJs from the Dig It Sound System. On a talks stage, Beatles biographer Hunter Davies appeared with author Robert Ryan and a panel of green experts discussed how to make NW5 a more pleasant place to live. Arts and crafts stalls and wizard Gandaldore kept children entertained. The organisers said: “It is our chance to celebrate being part of a community.”
