DEFIANT duo Charlotte Briant and Ruhel Miah both proved they pack a punch over the weekend when they struck gold at the 12th edition of the Haringey Box Cup, writes Steve Barnett.

Held at Alexandra Palace, Briant went straight into the Under-75kg final for Islington Boxing Club, where she defeated Zara Pennett-Harris from Lion ABC through a unanimous decision.

Islington’s other gold medal came courtesy of Miah, who also only ended up boxing once. Competing at Under-56kg, he dominated his semi-final contest against Northolt ABC’s Daniel Varadi on Saturday, stopping his opponent in the second round. But the 19-year-old was denied a return to the ring on Sunday when his opponent, Pete Oswald from the Royal Navy, withdrew.

Islington’s Ella Gilbert and Charlotte Briant

The success didn’t stop there for the team from Islington, based in Hazellville Road, Upper Holloway. Ella Gilbert recorded a 4-1 split decision victory over Double Jab ABC’s Zoe Hefford in the semi-final of the Under-57kg Class B division.

But a week after picking up a silver medal in the East Midlands Box Cup, Ella was again striking silver as she was beaten by Paulina Biernat from Left Hook ABC in the final.

Islington’s Connor Daly was also forced to settle for silver, despite his coaches feeling that their man had done enough to win his Under-52kg Senior A final against Muzzi Fuyana from Tyne Tees and Wear.

Daly went into the bout in confident mood having beaten Rickey Nesbitt from Holy Family BC Drogheda in the semi-final on Saturday. In the final, however, it was Fuyana’s arm that was raised in victory following a 3-2 split decision.
