UK viewers welcome football’s return to TV with open arms

29 May, 2020

The Bundesliga is back up and running and football fans now have a feast of action to look forward to each weekend – and with the possible resumption of La Liga, Serie A, and the Premier League, the schedule is only going to get busier from here on in.

Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Schalke on May 16th marked the return of the German top flight and broadcaster BT Sport drew a peak of 652,000 viewers on linear channels, which is in the same ballpark as some Premier League games on the same channel earlier in the campaign.

As a result of the first major televised live football for two months, online betting sites in the UK were packed with promotions and deals, with the 888sport free bet offer among them.

With the exception of Belarusian football, international horse racing, and online darts tournaments, there has been a huge shortage of events for sports fans to watch and bet on – but in recent weeks the UFC has made a comeback, Esports has become more prominent, and there is lots more to come.

La Liga could be next

The green light has been given for Spanish football to resume from June 8th, as announced by prime minister Pedro Sanchez.

La Liga president Javier Tebas hopes that June 11th will be the date in which football resumes in Spain, with Sevilla vs Real Betis set to be the first fixture.

“We could have the first game on Thursday 11th in Seville. We’d like it to be the Seville Derby,” said Tebas.

There are 11 rounds of La Liga fixtures remaining, and matches will take place every day as they look to complete the season before the end of July.

Italy decision imminent

Having been on hold since March 9th, Serie A could resume on June 13th or 20th according to Italy’s minister for sport Vincenzo Spadafora.

“The protocol arrived for resuming the season and it is very similar to the one that was agreed for training. On Thursday, we’ll decide if and when to resume,” Spadafora told Rai TG3.

Should one of those potential dates come to fruition, it will be a thrilling race to the finish line as only one point separates Juventus and Lazio.

A question of when, not if, for Liverpool

Liverpool are set to be crowned Premier League champions for the first time, and the betting odds on the Betfair Exchange have significantly shortened on a Premier League resumption before July 1st.

Betfair, one of the UK’s best betting sites, offer special markets on their exchange and as Project Restart has continued to progress, the price has reflected this.

There are still obstacles to overcome, but there are meetings set between players, managers, and clubs with a June 19th restart being targeted.

Players at Championship clubs have also returned to training, and Leeds United captain Liam Cooper told BBC Radio Leeds: “We’ve been able to train in a group of five, so there was the back four and a midfielder in our group this morning.

“All of the lads were buzzing to be able to kick a ball about with their mates again.”
